About Us
It is always with humbleness entangled in great delight to introduce you to Maphuki of Phokeng. It’s the story of a young Cape Town teacher driven by the need for extra income and a deep love for crafting things with his hands. This was me, Maphuki Tsatsane, in the late 1990s. Amid the vibrant buzz of Cape Town’s tourism scene, I began creating leather belts, bags, and sandals, selling them to tourists at the Cape Crafts Market.
In 2003, my journey led me back to my roots in Phokeng, where I opened a modest leather factory and a shop in Rustenburg. The local community embraced our leather creations, and my dual life of teaching and crafting continued until 2006. I balanced these two worlds with enthusiasm, knowing that every piece of leather I worked on had the potential to tell a story.
Then came December 2013, when we were led by the hand of Providence through the initiative of the DTI and SEDA, to be recognised, and landed an opportunity to operate a shop at Sun City’s Entertainment Centre. We catered to a diverse clientele of local and international tourists, making our mark in the sunlit world of leisure and luxury.
It was in 2016 when Sun City’s Entertainment Centre was reinvented that our shop closed. We then shifted our focus to furniture refurbishments and landing projects with prestigious names like Cascades and The Palace Hotels in Sun City. This opportunity transformed furniture refurbishments into our primary source of revenue, opening new doors and opportunities.
Today, Maphuki of Phokeng is a respected name in both leather and furniture refurbishment. We are currently working on an exciting new chapter with plans to partner with an FET College to offer courses in Leather Design, Upholstery, and Motor Trimming, nurturing the next generation of artisans.
Maphuki of Phokeng is a legacy of craftsmanship, resilience, and dedication.
Thank you for being a part of our story. Here’s to many more chapters filled with creativity, quality, and success!
